The Greek Islands are a wonderful place to vacation if you want fantastic views of the Aegean Sea, enjoy the sun and to enjoy local food and wines. Quentin and I took our first trip to the Greek Islands in 2005 for our honeymoon and we fell in love with it, so much so that we went back for our 5 year anniversary.
Now there are thousands of Greek Islands so choosing which one to visit was not easy. My friend recommended Fantasy Travel and they were very helpful in planning our first trip to Greece and to take all of the stress out of honeymoon planning. We liked them so much that we used them for our second trip as well.
When I got in touch with them they asked me a few questions to determine what type of trip we were looking to reserve:
1. Budget (We were wanting to stay under a certain amount (our budget needed to also include our flights).
2. What types of hotels we wanted, luxury, mid-range etc. We said we were hoping to get into the best that our budget would allow but that we certainly didn’t expect luxury accommodations.
3. Last question was what were we wanting from our vacation and we said to relax and get some peace & quiet, something as New Yorkers we rarely get!
For our honeymoon they recommended the Cyclades Islands of Naxos & Santorini. The Cyclades is a group of islands in the central Aegean Sea. As I mentioned, there are thousands of islands but they are grouped in clusters and each cluster has a name. The Dodecanese, located southeast between Crete (largest Island) and Turkey, the Sporades off the coast of Euboea (the second largest Island) Argo-Saronic Islands which is in the Sardonic gulf near Athens, the North Aegean islands, which is off the west coast of Turkey and the Ionian Islands located west of the Greek mainland in the Ionian Sea.
Their recommendations of Naxos and Santorini seemed to make sense. Naxos is not a party island and of course you absolutely can’t go to the Greek Islands and NOT visit Santorini so we took their advice.
For our 5 year anniversary, we returned to Naxos a second time and also visited Rhodes which is located in the Dodecanese.
